Treating Asthma and Allergies with Essential Oils

Tuesday, August 10th, 2010

Allergies and asthma can be treated in natural and convenient ways. Natural methods, instead of drug methods, prevent harmful toxins and chemicals from entering your body. Drug related methods have negative side effects, which most natural methods do not.

Essential oils help treat asthma and allergies.Acupuncture is one way you can treat asthma and allergies in a natural way. There are a lot of powerful acupuncture techniques and points that you can use to help improve and treat your lungs. Speak with your acupuncturist about rubbing on the wrist crease, which is where the lung point is.

Cleaning your nose can also treat symptoms of allergies. Cleansing your nose can really keep the nasal passage of your nose and throat clear. This can be really nice for people who are suffering from allergies and colds.

A good way to clean out your nose is with a saltwater solution. Saline, or saltwater solution, should be squirted through the nose. When it is swallowed you simply have to spit out the solution so you don’t have to swallow it.

Essential oils are a very good choice as well. Roman Chamomile, Lavender, Eucalyptus and Frankincense are good choices of essential oils. They can even be mixed together to breathe easier.

You can rub the essential oils directly on your chest a few times a day if you want. Another option is to put it in a warm bath. Essential oils can be applied on washcloths as well, or through a humidifier. Always speak to your aromatherapist beforehand to make sure you know how to use the oil correctly.

Herbal formulas improve the immune system. There are certain Chinese herbal formulas, like Ding Chuan Wan, that can help improve the strength of the body. Ding Chuan Wan is a well-known formula that is used a lot for asthma.

Certain supplements can also help with allergies and asthma. Supplements, like grape seed extract and cod liver oil, are good to use with allergies. Both supplements strengthen her immune system, while its anti-inflammatory properties reduce inflammation in the body.

The Making of Essential Oils

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010

Essential oils are very useful.  They give off pleasant fragrances that can uplift any room.  They can also be used for medical purposes.

Making essential oils can be complex.  The oil is gathered from various parts of plants.  Only a small part of the plant has oil on it so it may take up to a hundred pounds of the plant to make one ounce of the oil.  At least the oil is heavily concentrated.

There are multiple ways to extract the oil when making essential oils.  Some methods are better than others for specific plants.  Usually the harder it is to extract the oil from the plant, the more expensive the oil will be.

making essential oils

The most common method used for making essential oils is steam distillation.  In this method high-pressure steam goes over the plant matter, into another chamber, and then until a container.  The oil is skimmed off the top and the water underneath it can be used for toners or fragrances.

Now when the flower or plant is too fragile, then solvent or steam diffusion extraction is used.  Steam diffusion extraction is similar to steam distillation, but the steam is at atmospheric pressure instead of high pressure.  Solvent extraction uses a solvent to extract the oil and then the solvent is removed through low-pressure distillation.  A waxy solid is left over which is oils, waxes, and pigments and all of them are then separated out and used.

There are some flowers or plants that have very little essential oils.  For these plants the enfleurage method is used.  Enfleurage saturates flowers in odorless vegetable oil to extract the oil.  Alcohol then removes the essential oil from the vegetable oil and then evaporates over time.

Citrus essential oils come from the fruit of plants rather than the actual plant.  The cold pressing method squeezes the fruit until the juices are out.  The juice is then centrifuged to separate the oil.

The last method is carbon dioxide extraction.  The carbon dioxide is released into a container that has the plant and slowly turns into a liquid.  The liquid form of carbon dioxide acts as a solvent and extracts the essential oil.  The liquid passes into another chamber and the carbon dioxide evaporates into a gas and leaves the essential oil behind.

Depression affects you mentally making you feel like you are worth nothing.  It also affects your relationships.  Depression can affect you physically too.  Depression causes stress.  Stress causes a change in appetite, activity decrease, and can make the body strain.

essential oils

Aromatherapy is a natural way of helping with depression.  Aromatherapy uses scents to help penetrate the feeling of despair and help the body heal naturally.  Other natural things like exercise and sufficient sleep can help with aromatherapy to heal depression.

Aromatherapy uses essential oils for the fragrance.  Three essential oils that work really well at helping to heal depression are Jasmine, lavender French, and Neroli.  These essential oils can be used separately or combined.  If you combine them, they are just more powerful and effective.

Jasmine is a potent yet beautiful fragrance.  It can help relax you physically so that you can leave the stresses of the day behind you.  Jasmine also helps to give you a boost of self-esteem.

Lavender French helps you to relax mentally.  It can also help your mood and muscles relax.  Lavender French comes from France and is a very popular oil fragrance.

Neroli oil is a great sleeping aid.  Like Jasmine and Lavender French, Neroli helps to relax as well.  It can also help you feel rejuvenated and dispel anger and irritability.
