Essential oils are helpful for children during the summer. Children can benefit from the oils as much as adults can. Here are a few of our favorite oils that children really enjoy.

German Chamomile: Add a few drops of this oil to your child’s night time bath. The oil promotes restful sleep. Be sure to start off small with the oil when adding it to the bath because too much might irritate children’s skin.

Peppermint: Peppermint can help your child have good digestion. It is also handy for headaches. Be sure to only use it for children who are older than 30 months old.

Lavender: Lavender is a very versatile essential oil. Parents love this oil because of its healing properties, and children don’t complain because of the fabulous smell. Lavender is used to heal burns, cuts, stings, and much more.

Eucalyptus: Colds can still happen during the summer months, much to our dismay. If that is the case with your Essential oilschildren, eucalyptus essential oil is a good choice for you. Eucalyptus is a good decongestant and works as an immune-stimulant.

Lemon: Lemon in a room diffuser defends bodies against infection. It is also a delicious smell and works great as an air freshener. Lemon should be used in a diffuser, never applied directly to the skin or in a bath unless it is combined with another carrier oil.

Melaleuca oil: Melaleuca oil is another all-purpose essential oil. Add Melaleuca oil to your first aid kit because it is one of the best essential oils out there. It works to heal cuts and scrapes, and can be used to disinfect and reduce pain. The Making of Essential Oils

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010

Essential oils are very useful.  They give off pleasant fragrances that can uplift any room.  They can also be used for medical purposes.

Making essential oils can be complex.  The oil is gathered from various parts of plants.  Only a small part of the plant has oil on it so it may take up to a hundred pounds of the plant to make one ounce of the oil.  At least the oil is heavily concentrated.

There are multiple ways to extract the oil when making essential oils.  Some methods are better than others for specific plants.  Usually the harder it is to extract the oil from the plant, the more expensive the oil will be.

making essential oils

The most common method used for making essential oils is steam distillation.  In this method high-pressure steam goes over the plant matter, into another chamber, and then until a container.  The oil is skimmed off the top and the water underneath it can be used for toners or fragrances.

Now when the flower or plant is too fragile, then solvent or steam diffusion extraction is used.  Steam diffusion extraction is similar to steam distillation, but the steam is at atmospheric pressure instead of high pressure.  Solvent extraction uses a solvent to extract the oil and then the solvent is removed through low-pressure distillation.  A waxy solid is left over which is oils, waxes, and pigments and all of them are then separated out and used.

There are some flowers or plants that have very little essential oils.  For these plants the enfleurage method is used.  Enfleurage saturates flowers in odorless vegetable oil to extract the oil.  Alcohol then removes the essential oil from the vegetable oil and then evaporates over time.

Citrus essential oils come from the fruit of plants rather than the actual plant.  The cold pressing method squeezes the fruit until the juices are out.  The juice is then centrifuged to separate the oil.

The last method is carbon dioxide extraction.  The carbon dioxide is released into a container that has the plant and slowly turns into a liquid.  The liquid form of carbon dioxide acts as a solvent and extracts the essential oil.  The liquid passes into another chamber and the carbon dioxide evaporates into a gas and leaves the essential oil behind.

How Essential Oils Are Extracted

Sunday, May 30th, 2010

Essential oils are extracted from plants. Plants, woods, spices and herbs are main sources of natural essential oils. Distillation is the main source of getting the oil from the plant.

Distillation works well with roots, berries, and leaves. Sometimes, in the cases with wood, oil can be released when it is burnt. This was a popular technique with Indians, who used this aromatherapy method often.

Steam distillation is the most common method used to extract natural essential oil. A flow of steam is put in to a chamber that is holding the raw plant material. That steam causes small sacs in the plant to burst, releasing essential oil.
natural essential oils
The steam carries the oil out of the chamber and in to a condenser that is chilled. The steam becomes water once it hits the cooled condenser. At this point the water and oil are separated.

The water portion of the plants, or the cooled down steam, is known as hydrosol. Hydrosol is not wasted, or thrown away, since it still contains a small portion of the plant essence. Hydrosol can be used for different reasons, such as being used for their soothing properties or aroma.

There are a few different important factors in regards to how good the quality of distilled essential oil is. First, the temperature and pressure is important to how successful the distillation process is. The temperature of the extraction chamber needs to be monitored on a constant basis.

The reason is because the extraction chamber cannot have too high a temperature. Otherwise, the components of the oil might be ruined or altered. The pressure of the chamber also needs to be the correct pressure so it is not too harsh or lesson the oil’s effects.

When extracting natural essential oil it is important to take the time to make sure that all the oil components are flushed out of the plant. Some plants will release their oil more quickly than others. You can notice the difference between essential oils that are compared side-by-side with aggressive processing and slow processing.

Organic Essential Oil Production

Saturday, May 29th, 2010

Organic essential oils are liquid product that is taken from plants and herbs. They are used in a variety of products. Some of these products include perfumes, incense, cosmetics, detergents, and fabric softeners.

Essential oils have been known to be used since the days of Egypt. Early Egyptians used essential oils for cosmetics, perfumes and also for embalming their dead. Most organic essential oils have their name taken from the plant material they are taken from.

A lot of essential oils are taken through distillation. Distillation is the process of steaming the oil out of plants. It separates liquids with the help of vapor pressure.

organic essential oils
Some essential oils are harder to extract. These types of oils are usually very expensive because of the difficulty involved with getting the oil. The more complicated the process, the more expensive the essential oil will be.

A few examples of essential oils that had difficult extraction processes are jasmine and rose oil. Both have to undergo a complicated distillation process of being washed in super critical carbon dioxide or hexane. Then they extract a mixture of essential oils derived from the process called concrete.

The concrete, or mixture taken from the process, has to go under another phase of distillation. This time an alcohol-based product needs to be used. The concrete has to be distilled to separate the absolute essential oil product of jasmine or rose oil.

Organic essential oils can affect your body, which make them a popular, natural medicine. They are also known to help calm emotions and stimulate the senses. They can have strong, aromas that work with fragrance and aromatherapy.

There are dozens, if not hundreds, of essential oil products available. Each essential oil has strengths and specific things that it can be used for. Some essential oils are multi-purpose essential oils that can be used for quite a few different things. These types of oils are very handy in first aid kits and to keep around the home.

Essential Oils and Hair Loss

Monday, May 24th, 2010

Losing hair can be depressing. Whatever the reason for losing it, hair gives both men and women a certain value. Losing it can be more devastating to some people than others, and that is where treatments for hair loss come in.

People can put a lot of value on the amount of hair they have. Many products are currently available for hair regrowth. However, a lot of these are not very effective.

Hair loss, known in the medical world as alopecia, happens for a variety of reason. It can be caused because of hormones, drugs, cancer treatments, illnesses, and even genetics. Hair is lost in a few different ways as well.
organic essential oils
If you know the reason for the hair loss, then there can sometimes be a natural way to treat it. Organic essential oils have medicinal value to them. Depending on the type of hair loss, organic essential oils may be the perfect choice for you.

I’ll give you one example. In 1998 a study was done by 84 people who had alopecia areata, or male pattern baldness. Alopecia areata affected both men and women, and was suspected to be caused by an inflammatory immune response that happened when they were stressed.

The study wanted to see how organic essential oils affected alopecia areata if the individuals used organic essential oil applications to their scalp. They used a mixture of essential oils that had been used in history for baldness.

They put together a mixture of cedarwood, lavender, rosemary, and thyme essential oil. Half of the group used the organic essential oil mixture, and the other half used a plain carrier oil. They tested the group several times in a seven month period using photography and measurement systems to see if there was any improvement.

The results were that those that received active treatment with the essential oil treatment significantly improved by 44%. The placebo group that used carrier oil only improved by 15%. This suggests that essential oil treatments can promote hair growth.

Gel Candles

Monday, May 3rd, 2010

Gel candles are increasing in popularity.  They are very decorative and are great as scented candles.  Individuals are even starting to make gel candles as hobbies.

Before you start candle making with gel candles, you must know that there are different density levels.  The levels are low, medium, and high.  The density level within the gel candle affects the potency of the fragrance that the candle gives off when it is lit.

The lowest density level gives off a light fragrance that complements the room.  The highest density level has the power to cover up a foul scent.  So before you make your candle ask yourself, “how potent do I want my candle to be?”

The most popular thing about gel candles is its ability to suspend things within it.  The gel can hold objects like beads, stones, marbles, or even decorative fruit.  You can see these objects suspended in the candle because it is translucent.

candle making

Just like wax candles, gel candles can have dyes mixed in it as well.  Gel candles can be fragrant, colorful, and suspend objects within them.  The beauty of gel candles seems endless because you can do one or all of the options mentioned above.

In candle making, wax candles are easier to work with than gel candles.  Candle making with gel candles is harder because they never get in a true liquid form.  Even when you go to pour it into the mold, it is still a gel or syrup like consistency.

After a lot of practice, making gel candles will become easier.  You will always have to be careful about adding too much dye and fragrance though.  It is always worth the extra effort once you have your finished candle.

Candle making with gel is very rewarding.  It is rewarding because in the beginning it is tricky to work with, but over time you will master it.  Once you have made your candles you can enjoy them, sell them, or give them as gifts.
